Peptide Storage Guide: Refrigerator, Freezer, Light, and the 30-Day Rule
How to store lyophilized and reconstituted peptides correctly: temperature, light, freeze-thaw, and the 30-day clock that starts the moment you add bacteriostatic water.
Peptides degrade with heat, light, repeated freeze-thaw cycles, and time once reconstituted. Stored properly, most peptides last for years lyophilized and ~30 days reconstituted. Stored badly, you can lose potency in a week.

The two states a peptide can be in
Peptides ship in lyophilized (freeze-dried, powder) form. Once you add bacteriostatic water, they become reconstituted (liquid). The storage rules differ for each:

Lyophilized peptides: refrigerator first
For most research peptides, 2–8°C in the refrigerator is the right answer. The lyophilized powder is stable for many months — manufacturer stability data typically supports 24 months.
If you bought more than you'll use in 12 months, freeze the sealed lyophilized vial at -20°C. Lyophilized peptides tolerate freezing well because there's no water to form ice crystals.
Reconstituted peptides: the 30-day clock
The moment you add bacteriostatic water to a peptide vial, you start a clock. Two things degrade the peptide:
- Hydrolysis. Water slowly cleaves the peptide bonds. The reaction is temperature-dependent — refrigeration slows it dramatically.
- Bacterial contamination. Bacteriostatic water has 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a preservative, which prevents bacterial growth for ~30 days at refrigerator temperatures.
After ~30 days, both factors compound. Some research-grade users push to 45–60 days, especially for peptides with strong stability data (semaglutide, BPC-157). When in doubt, mark the date and stick to 30.
Label every vial
The single most useful habit: write the reconstitution date on the vial with a permanent marker. Without this, "is this vial still good?" becomes guesswork.
Some users also note:
- Peptide name (if not pre-labelled).
- Concentration (e.g., "2500 mcg/mL").
- Diluent volume used.
Light: which peptides care, which don't
Most peptides aren't notably light-sensitive. A few are:
- GHK-Cu — copper peptides are sensitive to UV. Wrap in foil or store in opaque containers.
- Some GLP-1 analogs — manufacturer guidance for Ozempic/Wegovy includes light protection.
- Melanotan II — sensitive to UV; store dark.
When in doubt, store in the original carton or wrap the vial in foil. Refrigerator interior light is minimal but cumulative.
Freezing reconstituted peptides
If you reconstitute more than you'll use in 30 days, freezing is an option — but the rule is single-use aliquots only.
The process:
- Split the reconstituted solution into the smallest dose-units you'll need (e.g., 0.5 mL aliquots).
- Use sterile, single-use vials or insulin syringes (caps replaced) for storage.
- Freeze at -20°C or colder.
- Thaw a single aliquot when needed. Never refreeze.
Repeated freeze-thaw cycles form ice crystals that mechanically damage peptide structure. Most peptides lose meaningful potency after 2–3 cycles.
Travel and shipping
For short trips (under 24h), an insulated cooler with a refrigerated gel pack is sufficient for reconstituted peptides. For longer travel:
- Dry ice maintains -20°C for ~24 hours per pound in a styrofoam cooler.
- Lyophilized peptides tolerate ambient temperatures for 1–2 weeks without significant loss, but you should refrigerate them on arrival.
For air travel: TSA generally allows medications and research compounds in carry-on with a doctor's letter or product documentation, but rules vary by country.
How to tell if a peptide has gone bad
- Cloudiness or particulates. Should be crystal clear (or very slightly opalescent for some compounds).
- Discoloration. Pink, yellow, or brown tints almost always indicate degradation.
- Off smell. Peptide solutions should be nearly odorless. Strong solvent or rotten smells = discard.
- Date-based. Over 30 days reconstituted, refrigerated → discard or freeze remaining if not already.
When in doubt, discard. Peptides are expensive but they're not worth the risk of an injection from a degraded vial.
Bacteriostatic water storage
Bac water itself is shelf-stable at room temperature once opened, for ~28 days per the manufacturer's official guidance. Many researchers refrigerate it after opening to extend usability.
Never use bac water past visible discoloration or for 60+ days after first puncture.
