Research Methodology

PepComputer synthesizes existing research — we do not conduct original experiments. This page explains how we evaluate the studies we cite, how we communicate uncertainty, and where our analysis has limits.

Evidence Hierarchy

Not all research carries equal weight. We apply a standard evidence hierarchy when assessing how strongly the data supports a claim:

  1. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) — the highest standard. We note sample size, duration, and whether results were replicated.
  2. Observational and cohort studies in humans — useful for establishing associations; we note they cannot prove causation.
  3. Animal studies (in vivo) — common in peptide research; we present these as preclinical data and do not extrapolate to human outcomes without human evidence to support it.
  4. In vitro studies (cell culture) — the earliest stage of evidence; we note that cell-culture results frequently do not translate to whole-organism effects.
  5. Case reports and anecdote — noted only when relevant to a discussion; never used as primary evidence for a biological claim.

Handling Preclinical Data

The majority of peptide research is preclinical — conducted in rodents or cell cultures. We cover this research because it forms the foundation of the field, but we label it clearly. Phrases like "researchers have studied in animal models" or "preclinical data suggests" indicate findings that have not been confirmed in human trials.

We do not present animal-study dosages as applicable to humans, and we do not present preclinical efficacy as established human benefit.

Citation Practices

When we cite research, we aim to include the journal name, publication year, and lead author where available. For well-known studies we link directly to the abstract or full text on PubMed or the publisher's site. Preprints are cited with a "preprint" label and the repository (bioRxiv, medRxiv, etc.).

We do not cite secondary sources (news articles, blogs, or summaries) as evidence for biological claims. If we reference a secondary source, it is clearly labeled as such.

Limitations We Acknowledge

  • Peptide research is a fast-moving field. Studies published after our last review date may not yet be reflected in our content.
  • Many peptides lack robust human clinical data. Where only animal research exists, we say so explicitly.
  • We are not primary researchers and do not have access to unpublished data or conference abstracts unless publicly available.
  • Individual variability, drug interactions, and health conditions are beyond the scope of what our content can address.

What "Research Suggests" Means

When we write "research suggests" or "studies have found," we are describing what the available evidence shows — not asserting a universal or proven fact. Science operates through accumulation of evidence, and most claims in this field exist on a spectrum of certainty.

"Proven" is a word we use sparingly and only when there is strong, replicated human evidence. For the majority of peptide research, the honest framing is "preclinical data indicates" or "early research suggests."
